Since the Easter festivities are close, people have started to decorate their homes with Easter symbols both inside and outside as you can see in the pictures below.

Much like in a lot of places around the globe, the symbols of the egg and Easter bunny are famous here too.

Since the Easter festivities are close, people have started to decorate their homes with Easter symbols both inside and outside as you can see in the pictures below.

Much like in a lot of places around the globe, the symbols of the egg and Easter bunny are famous here too.

Why do we have this strange tradition with the eggs and Easter bunny?

The Easter bunny and the eggs stem from a historical myth dating back to around 15th century. At this time, the tradition begins when people offered each other eggs, symbols of fertility and symbol of life (eggs containing new life) for Easter, when springtime, the time of revival, was just around the corner.

And what about the famous Easter bunny?

The Germanic goddess OSTARA was celebrated at the spring equinox for she was the goddess of fertility and of resurgence and was always accompanied by a bunny. Her name in German is “Ostern“ and in the Alsacian local dialect “Oschtra“ which both means Easter. Now you know of the historical importance and symbolism behind the use of eggs and bunnies during Eastertide.

In both regions (Alsace & Black Forest region) we have an additional Easter symbol the so called little Easter lamb called “Lämmlein“ in German or “Osterlamala“ in the Alsacian dialect. This dish is made from many eggs with lots of powdered sugar, making it taste like a delicious sponge cake. Shaped into the form of a white lamb, it is eaten on Easter Sunday. You will be able to find it in the local bakery stores.

You might be wondering why the same traditions can be found both in Germany and France. Alsace belonged to the Germans in the past and was a German-speaking region that adopted many German traditions. Some of these German traditions have remained ingrained in the culture of the Alsace region, although it has since then reverted to belonging to France.

So in case you are visiting during these Easter days, have fun checking out the region with its beautiful Easter decorations especially in the cities and villages in the Alsace region. Definitely check out the little Easter markets open to guests and locals alike.

My next blog about traditions will entail what people actually do during the prolonged Easter weekend, including a personal example from my own family.
